At this point, you can allow Setup to use all the space or set a size for the partition. If this is a clean hard drive, you can choose to create a partition in the un-partitioned space. Setup will scan for previous Windows installationĨ. Next you will get the option to repair or enter setup, choose to enter setup. Setup will start copying files, if you need to install any third-party or RAID drivers press F6 at this time. Press any Key when you see the prompt to 'Press Any Key"ģ. (BIOS must support booting from CD and boot order must be set so CD boots before hard drive.Ģ. Press ENTER to resume booting from the XP CD. You will need to run Windows Updates after install to ensure system is up to date.ġ. All system CDs have been slipstreamed to the newest service pack so you will not need to have the same service pack matching. Do some research on the system if you are unsure. This can be misleading however if you have changed versions since owning the computer. You can verify the type of Windows installed by looking at the Certificate of Authenticity on the computer. Also make sure that you are using the proper CD for the type of install, OEM or Retail. Note: When doing a Windows XP Clean Install, it is important to know what version of Windows XP is on your machine, Home or Professional. You would just want to remove simple things like the RAM modules, any cable you can easily unplug/replug, the hard drive, etc. If the fans are running, that is good and if it was me, I would unplug the laptop from the wall, remove the battery and open up whatever panel on the bottom I could open up with out too much force (you may need a screwdriver) and wiggle or unplug and replugĮverything I see (that unplugs), that looks like a connection, put it back together and see if it powers up properly then. If you don't have the Recovery Console CD in, does it stay power up (even with the other error message) or does it shut off? Tell us the make and model of your laptop or any details you can so we can give you the best advice. One short, two short, one short one long, three shorts, etc. If you are hearing other beeps, try to describe them in writing as best you can. Generally, one short beep on power up is a good sign. The beeps are codes that can help you figure out what is wrong. Now it sounds like you might have some hardware issue.ĭoes the system make any beeps when you power it up? If it doesn't come in handy for this, it may come in hand some other day. That's good that you have the CD and made sure it works in another system.
